BOISE, Idaho - Despite senior Matt Loucks' third consecutive singles victory in the No. 1 position, the University of Portland's men's tennis team suffered a 5-1 setback to Wichita State on Friday morning at the Boise State Red Lion Spring Break Tournament.
Wichita State recorded singles victories in every position except No. 1. The Shockers, who evened their season record to 5-5 with the win, will play in the ninth-place game on Saturday against Georgia State.
Portland's Loucks (pictured) defeated Goran Vujaklija 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) to claim the Pilots' only point of the dual. At 3-0, Loucks remains unbeaten in the tournament. The loss drops Portland's overall record to 6-12.
With time at a premium during the tournament, the doubles matches were once again not played.
The Pilots will now head to the Southeast bracket, where they will square off with Idaho State (7-7) for 11th place in the 16-team tournament. The two teams last met back on Jan. 29, 2005, when Portland scored a 7-0 home victory over the Bengals. The dual is scheduled for 9:00 a.m. on Saturday at the Boise Racquet and Swim Club.
