April 19, 2009

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The No. 17 Pepperdine men's tennis team made history on Sunday afternoon as it captured its 40th WCC Championship and 19th consecutive title after defeating San Diego, 4-1, in the finals.

The Waves (19-8) allowed only one point to be scored throughout the entire tournament. Pepperdine defeated both San Francisco and Santa Clara 4-0, in the earlier rounds.

"This is a tough tournament for us because we're expected to win and that's a lot of pressure on the guys," said Pepperdine Head Coach Adam Steinberg. "San Diego was amazing today. This is the best USD team I've seen in a long time. Our team fought harder today than any other team I've coached and it was great to see the freshmen win their first championship."

No. 9 nationally ranked Bassam Beidas/Omar Altmann (PEP)won all their double matches including Sunday's match against Dean Jackson/Nils Schive (USD), 8-4, on court 1. San Diego's Nikola Bubnic/Charl Wolmarans came back to defeat Hugh Clarke/Mahmoud Kamel (PEP), 8-5, on court 2. Alex Llompart/Jenson Turner (PEP) clinched the doubles-point for Pepperdine with an 8-6 victory over Juan de Villiers/Chris Coetzee (USD) on court 3.

Jackson (USD) gave the Toreros their first and only point with a 6-2, 7-5 win over Altmann (PEP) on court 1. Beidas (PEP) finished second with a 7-5, 6-1, victory over Charl Wolmarans (USD) on court 2. The score was 2-1 with Pepperdine leading. Llompart (USD) was next to finish after defeating Chris Coetzee (USD) 3-6, 6-2, 6-4. Clinching the match for the Waves was Kamel on court on 4 with a three set victory over Nikola Bubnic, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5.
