MALIBU, Calif. -- The #8 Pepperdine men's tennis team finished the regular season with a perfect 8-0 record in the West Coast Conference after defeating #39 BYU 6-1 on Friday afternoon. With the win on Senior Day, the Waves earn the No. 1 seed in the league tournament and receive a bye into the semifinal round.
Pepperdine, 22-5 overall, got off to slow start and lost the doubles point. BYU won on courts one and three, while Pepperdine pieced together an impressive victory from the No. 2 spot in the lineup. The duo of Finn Tearney and Alex Sarkissian were down 1-5 to Andrey Goryachkov and Spencer Smith before winning seven unanswered games to take the match 8-5.
Pepperdine has now won two-straight WCC regular-season titles, after winning the inaugural crown in 2012.
The Waves open action at the 2013 WCC Tennis Championship next week Friday, April 26 at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. Pepperdine earned a double-bye into the semifinal round by virtue of capturing the No. 1 seed, while BYU also earned a double-bye after clinching the No. 2 seed.
