SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The 2010 West Coast Conference Tennis Championships will be underway first thing Friday morning as the first matches are scheduled to take place at 8 AM at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego. All 16 WCC men's and women's teams will compete this weekend for an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Top-seeded Pepperdine enters as the heavy favorite on the men's side, as the Waves have won 40 of the last 41 WCC titles. The Waves are currently ranked No. 22 in the country and will face eighth-seeded Gonzaga in Friday's quarterfinals.
Santa Clara, ranked 55th in the nation, has enjoyed one of its best seasons in school history, earning the No. 2 seed on the men's side. Santa Clara will be matched up against No. 7 seed Saint Mary's, while No. 4 San Francisco will take on No. 5 Loyola Marymount.
The last match on the men's side will feature No. 3 seed San Diego and No. 6 Portland at 3:00 p.m. San Diego, which is ranked 58th in the nation, was the WCC runner-up last year.
After a strong regular season campaign, the Saint Mary's women earned the top seed in the eight-team bracket. The Gaels have finished second behind Pepperdine the last three years and look to pick up their first ever WCC title. The Gaels enter the tournament as the No. 38th ranked team in the country and are scheduled to take on No. 8 seed Loyola Marymount, while No. 4 Santa Clara and No. 5 San Francisco will also play in a morning quarterfinal.
Defending and 21-time champion Pepperdine is the No. 2 seed and will open against seventh-seeded Portland. The last match of the day will feature No. 3 seed San Diego (ranked 62nd in the nation) and No. 6 seed Gonzaga.
