Pacific, Portland, San Francisco and Santa Clara Advance to Second Round of WCC Men's Tennis Championships

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Higher seeds went 2-2 in the opening round of the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championship on a beautiful day for competition at the Barnes Tennis Center. No. 4 Santa Clara and No. 3 Portland advanced and No. 8 San Francisco and No. 7 Pacific posted upsets.

In second round action on Thursday, Pacific will take on Portland and Bay Area rivals San Francisco and Santa Clara will square off for the chance to advance to Friday's semifinals. Both matches start at 9:00 a.m. at the Barnes Tennis Center.

NO. 4 SANTA CLARA 4, NO. 9 SAINT MARY's 3
The No. 59 Bronco men's tennis team held off St. Mary's for a thrilling 4-3 win in the first round of the WCC Tournament on Wednesday. With Santa Clara down 3-2, Ilya Osintsev won his third set 7-5 and John Lamble won his third set 6-3 to clinch the victory. Santa Clara was down 3-2 and needed a victory to stay in the match. Lamble took a hard-fought 7-6 (4), 4-6, 6-3 to dispatch Joakim Norstrom at No. 1.

NO. 7 PACIFIC 4, NO. 6 BYU 2
Pacific men's tennis team advanced with a 4-2 victory over No. 6 Brigham Young. In doubles action, the duos of Daniel Alameh and Marlon Brand and Miguel Diaz and Alex Hamilton each picked up victories to give the Tigers the doubles point. In singles play, Denis Stolyarov and Diaz both started off with victories. After BYU won at No. 5 and No. 6, Alameh came back to win the final two sets and clinch the match for Pacific with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 win.

NO. 3 PORTLAND 4, NO. 10 GONZAGA 2
The No. 3 seed Portland Pilots knocked off No. 10 seed Gonzaga by a 4-2 margin in the opening round of the 2014 West Coast Conference Men's Tennis Championships Wednesday afternoon at the Barnes Tennis Center. The Pilots move on to face No. 7 seed Pacific on Thursday at 9 a.m. Portland started slowly and dropped the doubles point, but rebounded with solid singles play to secure the match.
