#5 San Francisco Upsets #4 Santa Clara, #3 San Diego Cruises into Semifinals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- The 2013 WCC Men's Tennis Championship continued this afternoon with No. 3 San Diego and No. 6 Saint Mary's each looking to secure a spot in the Championship semifinals. The Toreros came out strong, clinching the doubles point with victories on the Nos. 2 and 3 courts before registering straight set wins by Victor Pugliese (No. 5), Uros Petronijevic (No. 4), and Clarke Spinosa (No. 2) to clinch the match. The match at No. 1 singles looked to be a close one with San Diego's Thibaut Visy and Saint Mary's Jesse Kiuru splitting sets (1-6, 6-2) before going unfinished.

The upset of the day came this afternoon as No. 5 San Francisco forged a furious comeback over Bay Area rival No. 4 Santa Clara to advance to tomorrow's Championship semifinals. After dropping the doubles point, the Dons posted straight set victories at Nos. 4 and 6 singles, while the Broncos countered with a straight set win at No. 5 singles to even the match at 2-2. With three matches remaining, the Dons found an extra gear, highlighted by a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles by Thai Tu, and a match clinching 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory by Nils Skajaa to seal their place in the semifinal round.

Men's play resumes Friday afternoon with semifinal action slated to begin at 12:30 p.m. PDT. San Diego will face No. 2 BYU, while San Francisco squares off against top-seeded Pepperdine.
