April 26, 2006

SPOKANE, Wash. - Gonzaga University men's tennis coach Peter MacDonald has inked his first recruit as Roman Dojcak has signed a national letter of intent to play for the Bulldogs. MacDonald is just completing his first season as the Bulldogs head coach after joining the GU staff in late August.

Dojcak hails from Kosice, Slovakia and is currently an exchange student in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Dojcak has been playing competitive tennis since age 10 and climbed to 3rd in the Slovakian rankings for players 14 and under during the 2002 season. During that same season he broke into the European Tennis Association Top 50 as he helped capture the Slovak Republic doubles championship and placed third in singles competition. He was also a member of the Slovak National Team from 2001-03.

Since coming to the United States, Dojcak has participated in several USTA sanctioned events competing against players in the Top 10 of the Northern Section. He has won matches against 8 of the Top 10 ranked players in that region.

"Roman is a player who can make an immediate impact on this team," MacDonald stated of his first recruit. "I see him playing high in the line-up as he brings a great deal of quickness to our team. I was most impressed with his ability to produce a lot of pace on his ground strokes."
