Men's Tennis Garners Three Conference Awards

May 3, 2007

San Bruno, CA - The West Coast Conference announced the men's tennis conference awards for the 2007 season. The Gaels took three post season honors. Among the highlights, head coach Michael Wayman was named the WCC Coach of the Year. Senior Andre Sion was named to the All-WCC First Team and newcomer Joel Kusnierz was named to the All-WCC Second Team.

Head Coach Michael Wayman was named the WCC Coach of the year after leading the Gaels to their best finish in program history. The Gaels took third place in the conference after defeating Santa Clara in the final day of competition at the WCC Tournament. Wayman also led his team to their first national ranking earlier this season. This marks the second time that Wayman has earned this honor; he was named coach of the year in 2004.

"What an honor" said Wayman, seeming surprised of this award. "It feels great to be recognized by my peers." Wayman then turned the attention to his players. "I have to thank my team as a whole. They are quite a big part of this honor."

Senior Andre Sion was named to the All-WCC First Team. Sion won 17 matches in his senior year and had an 8-2 record against conference opponents. Sion began the year with a four match winning streak. He ended the season in similar fashion. Sion won his final seven singles matches of the year, including big wins at the WCC Tournament. Sion clinched the Gaels third place conference finish as he scored the fourth point in the Gaels final match of the season. This marks the second time that Sion has been named to the All-WCC First Team. Sion was honored in 2004 as well.

Joel Kusnierz was named to the All-WCC Second Team

Junior transfer Joel Kusnierz was named to the All-WCC Second Team. This marks the first conference honor for the newcomer. Kusnierz finished the season with an 11-8 singles record and a 6-4 record against WCC opponents. All of Kusnierz matches came from the No. 1 spot. At one point this season Kusnierz won five straight singles matches. He won both his singles matches in the WCC Tournament.

"This is great for both Andre and Joel" said Wayman. "The two played great this year and are both deserving of these honors. Joel has a great year for us from the No.1 spot. Andre had a fantastic year. It was great to see the senior go out the way he did."
