Pineda and Bulldog Doubles Team Earn WCC Honors

SPOKANE, Wash. - SPOKANE, Wash. - Marco Antonio Pineda, of the Gonzaga University men's tennis team, has been awarded All-West Coast Conference honorable mention accolades for the 2007 season. Joining Pineda in earning conferene honors is the Zags' doubles team of Bryce Cooper and Roman Dojack who were named All-WCC doubles honorable mention.

The doubles selection marks the first time in school history that a doubles team has been honored. Pineda also becomes the second Bulldog men's tennis play to earn all-conference singles honors. In 2001, Eduardo Kholberg was awarded first team recognition by the conference.

Pineda, a senior from Los Angeles, posted a 12-6 record at No. 4 singles and a 22-17 overall singles record for the Bulldogs this season. The senior posted a five-match win streak towards the end of the regular season, defeating opponents from Weber State University, Lewis-Clark State College, Eastern Washington University, University of Idaho and Whitman College.

Cooper and Dojcak teamed up to post a 13-7 record in doubles play during the spring, including a 10-4 record when playing at No. 2. The duo won nine consecutive doubles matches during the middle of the season, including posting victories over WCC opponents from Santa Clara University, Saint Mary's College and the University of San Francisco.

Pepperdine University's Andre Begemann was named WCC Player of the Year, while the Waves' Bassam Beidas took home Freshman of the Year honors after helping Pepperdine to the program's 38th conference title last month. Begemann is Pepperdine's 10th consecutive conference player of the year. After leading Saint Mary's College to its best WCC Tournament finish in program history, head coach Michael Wayman was named WCC Coach of the Year. The No. 5 seeded Gaels topped Santa Clara to finish third at the WCC Championships and earn Wayman his second coach of the year honors.
