SAN BRUNO, Calif.-- The West Coast Conference award Player of the Month honors in the sports of tennis and baseball to eight different student-athletes. In tennis, both singles and doubles were recognized, while in baseball a player and pitcher were awarded.
Men's Tennis Singles - Dean Jackson, USD
San Diego sophomore Dean Jackson went 4-0 at the No. 1 singles position, including a perfect 3-0 at the WCC Championships. In San Diego's final match against Pepperdine, Jackson defeated WCC Player of the Year and No. 44-ranked Omar Altmann in straight sets (6-2, 7-5). He is now ranked No. 52 in the country and will take a seven-match win streak into the NCAA Division I Singles Championships.
Men's Tennis Doubles - Omar Altmann/Bassam Beidas, PEP
The No. 10-ranked Pepperdine pair of Omar Altmann and Bassam Beidas went 4-1 for the month of April with an impressive win over No. 13-ranked California duo of Geoff Chizever and Pedro Zerbini. Altmann and Beidas were named to the all-conference Doubles First Team and will compete together at the NCAA Division I Doubles Championships.
Women's Tennis Singles - Alex Liles, PEP
Pepperdine senior Alex Liles went 5-1 in April at the No. 3 singles positions. She went undefeated at the WCC Championships and posted wins over UC Irvine and Long Beach State. Liles was named to the all-conference First Team in singles and doubles.
Women's Tennis Doubles - Anamika Bhargava/Alex Liles, PEP
The No. 1 Pepperdine doubles team of Anamika Bhargava and Alex Liles held a 5-2 record and was named to the all-conference first team. The duo's only losses came to the No. 11-ranked pair of Hilary Barte and Lindsey Burdette from Stanford and No. 6-ranked pair of Mari Anderson and Jana Juricova from California.
Baseball Player - Tyson Van Winkle, GON
Tyson Van Winkle of Gonzaga went 33-for-67 (.493) to lead all hitters during the month of April. He tallied seven doubles, two home runs, and 20 RBI while slugging at .687 and reaching base at a clip of .551. In 16 games over the month, he had 12 multi-hit games, an eight game hitting streak, and had back-to-back games of five and four hits. He also had six multi-RBI games and had a hit in eight straight plate appearances at one point.
Baseball Pitcher - Lee Roberts, LMU
Lee Roberts of LMU went a perfect 4-0 during the month helping his team into a tie for first place in the conference standings. In 31 innings, he struck out 25 with a 3.48 ERA while holding batters to a .231 average. He also registered a complete game, second of the season, in April and went at least seven innings in all four starts, averaging 6.25 strikeouts a contest.
