Malibu, Calif. - Freshman Bassam Beidas, who helped lead the Pepperdine men's tennis team to its 38th West Coast Conference (WCC) title last month, was named the conference's Player of the Month for April, it was announced on Friday.
Beidas and fellow freshman James Lemke also were named the WCC's top doubles tandem for the month.
Beidas posted an 8-0 record while playing at No. 2 singles, helping Pepperdine to an 8-1 record for the month. The Cairo, Egypt native went 2-0 against ranked opponents, defeating No. 14 Michal Kokta of Baylor and No. 75 Richard Wire of Stanford.
Beidas also recorded a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 victory over San Diego's Chris Coetzee to clinch the WCC title for the Waves. The win earned Pepperdine the automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. Beidas capped the successful month ranked No. 54 by the ITA and earned the WCC Freshman of the Year award.
Beidas and Lemke went undefeated during the month, compiling an 8-0 record to finish the regular season. The duo won by four points or more in four of their eight wins, which included victories over No. 4 Baylor and two wins over San Diego. The duo closed out the month by earning second team All-WCC second team honors.
Pepperdine begins defense of its 2006 national championship on Friday when it faces Penn State in the first round of the 2007 NCAA Championships at Marks Tennis Stadium on the campus of USC beginning at 1 p.m.
