MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's tennis team will officially begin defense of its first national title Friday afternoon when it takes on Penn State University at 1 p.m. (PDT) at Marks Stadium on the campus of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
USC will face UC Santa Barbara in the second first-round match of the day.
The Waves enter the NCAA Championship Tournament with a 22-7 overall record as the automatic qualifier out of the West Coast Conference. Penn State earned an at-large bid to the championships with a 16-6 overall record out of the Big 10 conference.
Pepperdine picked up its first men's tennis team title and the Universities' ninth in 2006.
This season marks the 29th appearance in the NCAA Championships and 18th straight dating back to 1990. Overall, Pepperdine is 42-28.
Fans attending Friday's match are strongly encouraged to arrive as close to the 1 p.m. start time as possible to allow traffic from USC's graduation ceremonies a chance to clear. Those not able to attend can view the match via streaming video available on the USC athletic website.
