Malibu, Calif. - The No. 2 Pepperdine men's tennis team will appear in its second straight NCAA Round of 16 as it handed TCU a 4-0 defeat in the second round on Sunday at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. The Waves (32-2) will meet Florida (17-7) on Saturday, May 20 at noon at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, Calif.
The Waves, who defeated TCU earlier in the season, never gave the Horned Frogs a chance as they dominated the match from the start. The No. 47 Wave duo of Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico defeated Andrei Mlendea and Cosmin Cotet 8-3 at court two, while the No. 3 doubles team of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann put away No. 27 Jordan Freitas and Rafael Abreu 8-5 at court one to win the doubles point.
Pepperdine took a 3-0 lead when Richard Johnson crushed Radu Barbu 6-0, 6-3 at No. 5 and No. 31 Rico defeated No. 91 Abreu 6-4, 6-2 at No. 2. After a 3-0 deficit in the first set, Omar Altmann fought back to defeat Freitas 6-4 and then clinched the match with a 6-2 win in the second set.
When the match was abandoned, Doerner led 6-1, 4-3 over No. 34 Mlendea at No. 1, while Lovrak led 7-5, 3-3 at No. 3. Begemann lost the first set to Cotet, but was leading 4-2 in the second set at court four.
Head coach Adam Steinberg could not be more excited for his team. "I'm so happy for the seniors and also for our new players to experience the Sweet 16 for the first time. It was a tough match against TCU and it feels great to get through the match today."
