STANFORD, Calif. - No. 21 Pepperdine lost 4-0 to No. 7 Stanford in the second round of the 2010 NCAA Tournament on Sunday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. This was the Waves' 13th consecutive appearance in the NCAA second round and third straight year competing against Stanford in the second round for a berth in the Round of 16.
The Waves (17-11) had beaten the Cardinal (20-5) in the second round in Malibu in 2008, but Stanford won the rematch in Palo Alto in 2009. The home side prevailed for the third straight year today.
Despite dropping the doubles point and being down 3-0, Pepperdine put up a strong fight in singles and claimed some momentum at No. 2, 3 and 4 singles.
However, Stanford's No. 6 singles player Greg Hirshman clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 win over the Waves' Jenson Turner.
Pepperdine won its first-round match for the 13th straight year after beating Hawaii, 4-0, on Saturday. Today's loss snapped a seven-match winning streak.The Waves end their season with a 17-11 overall record.
Though Pepperdine's season ends as a team, senior Bassam Beidas (Cairo, Egypt) will play in the NCAA singles tournament and Beidas and sophomore Alex Llompart (Carolina, Puerto Rico) will compete in the NCAA doubles tournament. Beidas is ranked #32 in singles by the ITA and the duo is ranked #27. The tournaments will be held May 26-31 in Athens, Ga.
