May 16, 2011

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The University of San Diego men's tennis team had their run in the NCAA Championships ended Saturday afternoon with a 4-0 loss to No. 2 Southern California from USC's Marks Stadium. Despite being shutout, the Toreros (19-7) battled in most of their matches, trading blows with the Trojans (23-2) before ultimately falling in the second-round match.

Doubles play started with the Trojans notching the first win of the day as Jaak Poldma and J.T. Sundling topped 16th-ranked Dean Jackson and Patrick Pohlmann 8-3 at No. 1. USC would go on to clinch the doubles point with a win at No. 2 as Steve Johnson and Emilio Gomez defeated Nikola Bubnic and Nils Schive 8-4. Clarke Spinosa and Thibaut Visy were one game away from defeating Daniel Nguyen and Ray Sarmiento at No. 3 but were unable to finish their match once USC clinched the doubles point.

In singles, the Trojans were able to pull ahead early in three of the six matches. Abdullah Hashem fell into a 4-0 hole to Peter Lucassen in the first set at No. 6 that resulted in an eventual 6-0 first-set defeat. In the second set, Lucassen opened up a 5-1 lead that allowed him to win the match with a 6-1 second-set victory that put USC up 2-0.

The Trojans then took a 3-0 lead when Nguyen defeated Bubnic at No. 3. No. 120 Bubnic had to dig himself out of a 3-0 hole early in the first set to take two games, but eventually lost the set 6-2 to Nguyen, who is ranked 44th. In the second set, Bubnic trailed 3-2 before losing the second set 6-2.

USC would clinch the match with a win at No. 5. Visy also opened the match down 4-0 to Gomez before ultimately losing the first set 6-1. Visy came back in the second set to keep it close at 4-3 before Gomez closed it out with a 6-3 second-set win.

With the loss, the Toreros' season comes to a close, but Jackson and Pohlmann will be competing in the singles and doubles competition at the NCAAs, which will be hosted by Stanford University and will take place following the team championships May 25th to 30th.
