Men's Tennis Falls in Round of 16 Singles Draw

May 22, 2009

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - Pepperdine's Omar Altmann and San Diego's Dean Jackson both dropped out of the 2009 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships with tough losses in the Round of 16.

Altmann battled hard against the No. 1 seed, Tulsa's Arnau Brugues, only losing by one break (7-6, 6-3). Jackson had a tight match as well, falling in three close sets to Texas A&M's Conor Pollock (4-6, 6-3, 6-4).

Both Altmann and Jackson were members of the WCC All-Conference First Team. Altmann was named the 2009 WCC Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while Jackson was named Freshman of the Year back in 2008. Both men were ranked nationally throughout the course of the 2008-09 tennis season and held outstanding season records.

Altmann, now a senior, will look forward to ending his Pepperdine tennis career on a high note as he continues in the doubles draw with partner Bassam Beidas. The duo convincingly beat Ohio State's Justin Kronauge and Steven Moneke today (6-1, 6-2) to move on to the quarterfinals of the 2009 NCAA Men's Doubles Championships.

Jackson, only a sophomore, ends his season here, but will have two bright years ahead, hoping to lead the Toreros to their third WCC Championship title in program history.
