NCAA Men's Tennis Singles And Doubles Recaps

Stanford, CA - The NCAA men's tennis singles and doubles championships continued at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, CA on Thursday. San Diego's Pierrick Ysern and Pepperdine's Pedro Rico were in action in the singles tournament, while tandems from both USD and Pepperdine began play in the doubles competition.

Ysern clinched a tight three-set victory over Alabama's No. 61 Joseph Jung to move onto the Round of 16 in the singles tournament. Scores went 6-4, 6-7(4), and 6-4. With his two wins thus far, Pierrick assures himself of garnering his second straight NCAA All-America award.

Ysern clinched an easy win in the first set, defeating Jung by a score of 6-4. Ysern took an early lead in the second set, but Jung closed in to take a 7-6 tie breaker win. The third set remained a close battle throughout, but Ysern would prove triumphant and took a 6-4 victory over Jung.

Rico fell in the second round of the NCAA Singles Championships to Adrians Zguns of Arkansas 6-3, 6-2. Rico defeated fourth-seeded Lars Poerschke of Baylor in three sets to advance to the second round. The Spain native went 3-0 at the Championships and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament team at No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles along with senior teammate Ivor Lovrak.

In the doubles tournament, Pepperdine's No. 3 seeded duo of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann earned a first round win over Ball State's Matt Baccarani and Patrick Thompson. Doerner and Begemann, who spent time as the No. 1 ranked duo in the nation earlier this season, registered a straight set win to advance to the second round, 6-1, 6-4.

USD's 24th-ranked duo of Ysern and Thomas Liversage lost their first round match to Texas Christian University's Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas, ranked 27th nationally. Scores went 6-3, 4-6, and 6-3. After falling in the first set, Ysern and Liversage dominated the second set and took a decisive 6-4 victory over the TCU pair. After a close battle during the third set, Abreu and Freitas pulled away to claim the set and the win.
