Pepperdine Doubles Tandem of Doerner and Rico Advance to NCAA Title Match

May 29, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - Pepperdine's No. 2 seeded duo of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann advanced to the final of the NCAA Doubles Championship with a 6-3, 7-6 (7) win over Marcos Born and Andreas Siljestrom of Middle Tennessee on Sunday. The Wave tandem will meet the No. 3 seeded pairing of Kevin Anderson and Ryan Rowe of Illinois for the NCAA Doubles title on Monday at the Taube Tennis Center in Stanford, CA.

Doerner and Begemann, who spent several weeks as the No. 1 ranked doubles tandem during the regular season, will look to bring Pepperdine its second national tennis title in the last week after the duo helped the Waves win the program's first-ever national team title last Tuesday. Doerner and Begemann improved to 31-5 on the season with the semi-final win on Sunday.

"We're excited. We believed we could win it, just like the team [title]," stated Doerner. "Now we've given ourselves a chance. We're ready and we want to play a good match tomorrow."

The Illinois pairing of Anderson and Rowe advanced to the NCAA Doubles final with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Rafael Abreu and Jordan Freitas of TCU in Sunday's other semi-final.

"They're good players, the Illinois guys and they're ranked high and they're big guys just like these [Middle Tennessee State] guys," said Doerner. "It should be a good game, serve and return. I think if we come out and play our game, we've got a good chance."

Pepperdine has had two previous doubles champions, with Kelly Jones and Jerome Jones winning the title in 1984, and Kelly Jones pairing up with Carlos DiLaura to claim the 1985 crown. The last Waves to reach the final were Robert Lindstedt and Kelly Gullett, who fell to the Stanford duo of Bob and Mike Bryan in the 1998 championship match.
