Doerner, Begemann Fall in NCAA Doubles Championship Match

May 29, 2006

Stanford, Calif. - In addition to the NCAA Men's Tennis Team Championship, the Pepperdine doubles tandem of Scott Doerner and Andre Begemann became the NCAA Doubles runner-up on Monday afternoon at Stanford's Taube Tennis Center. The second-seeded Wave duo fell to the third-seeded Illinois doubles team of Ryan Rowe and Kevin Anderson 6-2, 6-4 in the final match to conclude a momentous fortnight in collegiate tennis.

"They played a great match," said sophomore Begemann. "We won the National Title last week and we were playing great in doubles. These guys came out big today. We were hoping to get our chance in the second set, but they were playing too good. They were just too good today."

Compiling a 31-6 record this year, the Pepperdine doubles team ended one of the most successful seasons in the program's history. In just one season, the team moved into third place for all-time most career wins. Doerner, a senior from Melbourne, Australia, concluded his overall doubles career with a 93-23 record.

With its first No. 1 national ranking since 1986, the Pepperdine men's tennis team concluded the season 36-2 after avenging its two losses--Texas and Georgia--in the final two matches of the NCAA Championships. The team's 36 victories are the most ever for an NCAA champion since the team championship format was established in 1977.
