Fall Season Opens Friday

Oct. 5, 2006

Los Angeles, Calif. - Loyola Marymount men's tennis opens the 2006 fall season this Friday, October 6, as the Lions travel cross-town to participate in the UC Irvine Pre-Regional Challenge. The Challenge will be one of four fall events for the Lions, who return three seniors this season.

The UC Irvine Pre-Regional Challenge opens Friday with LMU, Arizona State, UC Riverside, Northern Arizona, Cal Poly, and the host Anteaters competing. Play will continue through Sunday at UCI.

"We have been working hard on our conditioning for the past month, and have been beating up on each other for quite a while now in practice," LMU Head Coach Nik DeVore said. "So it will be nice to finally get out there and compete against some other teams this weekend."

The Lions' current roster boasts just three returners, all seniors. Nico Terrien, Matt Phillips, and Reyniere Roxas lead a group of six freshmen and two transfers. "We will be looking for our seniors to step up and lead our young group of players this season," DeVore said. "We have a good group of student-athletes, and they have been working hard. This will be a good opportunity to see how they compete in a tournament setting."

Terrien and Roxas both earned All-West Coast Conference recognition last season.

"Our main concern at this stage in the season is to compete hard and improve," DeVore said. "The talent looks to be there, but that only takes a team so far. We will no doubt experience some growing pains, but our main goal has always been to peak at the WCC Championships in April."
