Malibu, Calif. - After one day of competition at the Midland Racquet Club Invitational on Friday, the Pepperdine men's tennis team saw its three singles players eliminated in the second round, but the doubles team of senior Richard Johnson and junior Andre Begemann posted a first-round victory.
In the first round of singles play, Johnson defeated Oivend Alver of SMU 7-6, 6-0, but fell to Dimitar Kutrovsky of Texas 7-5, 6-3 in the second round. Sophomore Omar Altmann also posted a first-round win as he defeated Daniel Omana of University of Texas at Arlington 7-6, 3-6, 6-0. TCU's Chris Biro defeated Altmann 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. After a first-round bye, Begemann lost to Jason Mok of Rice 6-4, 6-3.
The tandem of Johnson and Begemann defeated Texas Tech's Dimitrio Martinez and Sinisa Markovic 9-8. Doubles competition will continue today with the championship match set for Sunday.
