Oct. 15, 2007

Seattle, WA - The Saint Mary's Men's Tennis team participated in the ITA Regional at the University of Washington over the weekend. The regional began on Friday, as the Gaels played in seven singles matches and three doubles matches.

Andrea Zannoni was defeated in the first round of singles competition, but rebounded to win three straight matches and advance to the consolation quarterfinals. In the round of 16, Zannoni defeated Sacramento State's Purit in a super tie break, 6-1, 3-6, 10-8. Zannoni could not play in the quarterfinal match, due to the Gaels' travel schedule.

Newcomer Marek Dvorak won his first match of the singles division, defeating San Francisco's Einar Hart, 7-5, 6-3. Dvorak advanced to the round of 32, facing Geoff Embry of Oregon. Dvorak had two set points in the first set against the Duck, but lost it in the tie break. In the second set of the match, Dvorak broke serve twice, but was unable to overcome his opponent, losing a close battle, 6-4, 6-3.

Dvorak teamed up with Achim Christner in doubles play, winning their first match in the round of 32. The pair defeated Joel Kincaid and Dillon Pottish of Portland, 7-5, 6-3. In the second round, Dvorak and Christner faced fifth seeded Gregory Hirshman and Richard Wire of Stanford University. The Gaels would be edged by the Cardinal, 8-6. Head Coach Michael Wayman stated, "The boys played a hard-fought match. I am pleased at how they performed."

Freshman Gerry Ellison had two excellent performances over the weekend. Ellison lost the first round of the regional, facing Washington's top player Pat Fischer in the first round. In Ellison's second appearance of the weekend, he matched up against Nevada's Augustin Myrad. The match was well played on both sides, forcing a super tie break. Myrad proved to be too much in for Ellison in the final moments, scraping out the win 13-11. Head Coach Michael Wayman stated, "Gerry Ellison put on an excellent performance against top competition. I am very happy with his play over the weekend."

The Gaels return to action at the Cal Invitational on October 26-27.
