Malibu, Calif. - After the opening day of competition at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Region (South) Men's Regional Championships hosted by Pepperdine, four singles players advanced into the main draw, while the first round of doubles was completed at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.
USC's Jarryd Cooper, San Diego's Lawrence Kourie, UC Santa Barbara's Josh Finkelstein and UC Riverside's Jonathan Calienes all advanced into the singles main draw.
UC Riverside and UC Irvine each advanced two doubles teams to the second round. UC Riverside's Joe Cartledge and Bobby Tam defeated Michael Look and Andrew Eklov of UCLA, 8-6, while teammates Jordan Peana and Peadraum Rouhafza put away San Diego State's Nima Ossareh and Michael Beron, 8-6.
Andrew Bertolina and Doug Taylor of UC Irvine defeated San Diego's Sam Atri and Ryo Sekiguchi 8-6, while Suzuki and Tsai handed LMU's Reyniere Roxas and Nick Von Der Ahe an 8-6 defeat.
For the Waves, sophomore Troy Aiken was defeated by UC Riverside's Gorjan Kovacevic in the tie breaker in the first round of qualifying singles. Aiken took the first set 6-4, but fell in the second set, 6-1, and, 11-9, in the tiebreaker. After a first-round bye, junior Oliver Hyams met Nick Perez of LMU in the second round. Perez defeated Hyams in the tiebreaker as he won 1-6, 6-4, 12-10.
