(San Francisco, CA) - USF men's tennis will compete at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Northwest Regional Championship at Stanford University's Taube Tennis Stadium.Top players from 15 schools in the Northwest Region will participate in Palo Alto October 20-24. Senior Matt Berry and sophomore Thong Tu will be San Francisco's top seeded players at the event.
The Dons will join players from Cal, Cal Poly, Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, Oregon, Pacific, Sacramento State, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington, as well as West Coast Conference teams, Gonzaga, Santa Clara and St. Mary's in the competitive four day event. The singles and doubles champion from this event will earn automatic spots in the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championship, hosted by Ohio State University November 2-5.
At the 2006 Bronco Classic, held October 6-8, Berry defeated two Santa Clara players, first Bobby Rasmussen (5-4; 7-5) and then Brian Brogan (7-5; 7-5), to advance to the quarterfinals, where he fell to Nevada's Guillaume Tonelli 6-7(1); 6-2; 6-2. Tu had a strong run in the Flight A consolation bracket, advancing to the semifinals, where he defeated Oregon's Marcos Verdasco 6-3; 6-1.
