Malibu, Calif. - All eight singles seeds and the top four doubles seeds advanced to the third round of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Region (South) Men's Regional Championships hosted by Pepperdine.
Doubles got the day's action started with Pepperdine's top-seeded duo of Omar Altmann and Andre Begemann handing Arizona's Jason Labrosse and Peter Zimmer an 8-2 defeat. The pair will face Ryan Waits and Jack Marsh of Arizona State in a 10 a.m. third-round match on Friday.
UCLA's No. 2 seed tandem of Ben Kohlloeffel and Chris Surapol easily defeated Arizona's Alex Labrosse and Francois Vandermerve, 8-0, while the third-seeded Bruno Alcala and Claudio Christen of Arizona put away Arizona State's T.J. Bellama and Juan Carlos Rebezza, 8-5.
In singles, No. 1 seed Kohlloeffel posted two straight-set victories and will face Tom Liversage of San Diego in the third round at 11 a.m. For the Waves, eighth-seeded Begemann defeated Ryan Waits of Arizona State 6-1, 6-4 and followed with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UCLA's Michael Look. The junior will face UC Santa Barbara's Bijan Hejazi tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Pepperdine senior Richard Johnson along with Altmann also had success in singles. Johnson, who was down one set against UC Riverside's Joe Cartledge, came back to win the first-round match 6-7, 7-6, 6-0. The senior advanced to the third round after LMU's Nico Terrien retired. Altmann advanced to the second round after San Diego's Lawrence Kourie retired and put away USC's Garrett Snyder 6-2, 6-2. Altmann will face fourth-seeded Chris Groh of San Diego State at 11 a.m., while Johnson will face his Aztec teammate, No. 7 seed Markus Dickhardt at 1 p.m.
Doubles is slated for 10 a.m. tomorrow with singles beginning at 11 a.m. All matches will be played at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
