LMU men's and women's tennis teams will be participating in the 2007 Wilson/ITA Western Region Championships this weekend. The men head to Pepperdine October 17-22 while the women will be hosted by San Diego State and USD October 18-22. For both the men and the women, the singles finalists and doubles champion from this weekend's event will earn automatic berths into the ITA National Indoor Championships, Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.
The 16-team tournament for the women hosted by SDSU and USD gets underway on Thursday October 18 with first-round doubles matches beginning at 9 a.m. In singles play, Senior Pavla Mesterova comes into the tournament as a number eight seed with a bye in the first round. Tamara Tanner, Tina Razloznik and Audrey Bulkley will also have byes in round one of the tournament. Freshmen Jasmin Heckel will face Pepperdine's Tania Rice while Sophomore Bliss Nixon will compete against AnaVictoria Lind from UCLA.
In round one of doubles action, Tanner and Mesterova will take on the Simic and Scatliffe duo from UC Santa Barbara as Nixon and Heckel will look to defeat UNLV's Hiduegi and Dimitrova. In other doubles play, Razloznik and Bulkley will compete against Liles and Braverman from Pepperdine.
Over in Malibu at Pepperdine, 14 teams in all are slated to compete in the men's Western Championships. Those teams include USC, UCLA, Pepperdine, UC Riverside, LMU, San Diego, San Diego State, Arizona, Arizona State, UC Irvine, UCSB Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Fresno State and Hawaii. The event will begin Wednesday, October 17 at 9 a.m. and commence on Monday Oct. 22.
Seventeen regions around the country will host the 2007 Wilson/ITA Championships throughout the month of October.
