(Malibu, CA) - The USD men's tennis team is competing in the 2007 Wilson/ITA West Region Championships and two players are still alive in singles play. Senior Thomas Liversage and freshman Dean Jackson have both advanced to Friday's Round of 32. Jackson knocked off Jay Goldman of Arizona, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round, and came back to down Pepperdine's Omar Altmann, 6-4, 6-4, in the round of 64. Liversage, seeded 9th, had a bye into the round of 64 and beat UC Santa Barbara's Max Taylor, 7-5, 6-4. Liversage will meet up with USC's Gary Sacks at 2:30 p.m. on Friday; Jackson will take on Fresno State's Rudolph Siwy at 11 am.
USD's Jose Munoz won his first round match, a 7-6, 6-4 decision over Cal Poly's Blake Wardman. In the round of 64 he lost to Hawaii's Jeff Fitch, 6-3, 6-4. Three other Toreros lost first round matches in the round of 128 - Nils Schive to Pepperdine's Stuart Kepler (6-3, 2-6, 6-3), Levon Brown to USC's Daniel Gliner (6-3, 3-6, 6-4) and Tamer Antabi to LMU's Stefan Nikolic (7-6, 6-0).
USD's doubles team of Liversage and Chris Coetzee, the No. 5 seeded tandem, beat Pepperdine's team of Kamel-Kepler in the round of 32, 8-5. Tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. they will face Fresno State's team of Alapati-Leiby.
