Malibu, Calif. - Seven of eight singles seeds advanced to the quarterfinals, while all four doubles seeds are still alive after the third day of competition of the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Region (South) Men's Regional Championships came to a close at Pepperdine's Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
No. 1 seed Benjamin Kohlloeffel of UCLA will face Pepperdine's eighth-seeded Andre Begemann in an 11:30 a.m. quarterfinal match. Kohlloeffel fell in the first set, 7-5, against San Diego's Tom Liversage, but came back to win 6-3, 6-1 to advance. Begemann also won in three sets as he defeated UCSB's Bijan Hejazi 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
In doubles, top seed Altmann and Begemann easily put away Arizona State's Marsh and Waits, 8-1. In the day's only quarterfinal match, the Wave duo advanced to the semifinals after an 8-5 come-from-behind victory over San Diego State's Gomez and Timu.
Kohlloeffel and Chris Surapol also had an easy time moving into the quarterfinals with an 8-3 win over UCI's Lamm and Sundling. Arizona's third-seeded team of Alcala and Christen posted an 8-3 victory, while fourth-seeded Cvetkovic and McNaughton of USC moved into the quarterfinals with an 8-4 win.
Tomorrow's action will resume at 10 a.m. when the remainder of the quarterfinal doubles matches will be completed, while singles will kick off at 11:30 a.m. All matches will be played at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center.
