Malibu, Calif. - Pepperdine's Andre Begemann continued his run at the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Western Region (South) Men's Regional Championships as he advanced to the singles championship match on Sunday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif.
Eighth-seeded Begemann upset No. 4 seed Chris Groh in the semifinals in three sets. After falling 6-4 in the first set, the Wave responded with a 6-4 win of his own. The two battled in the third set with Begemann coming out on top posting another 6-4 victory.
Begemann will face No. 2 seed Chris Surapol of UCLA in the championship match which is slated for Monday at 1 p.m. Surapol advanced to the final with a 6-4, 6-4 win over third-seeded Jamil Al-Agba of USC.
"Andre is playing great," said head coach Adam Steinberg. "We really needed someone to step-up this fall and he's doing an amazing job of that. He works really hard and if he keeps his head like he did today he can win big matches."
Monday's match will mark the second time that Begemann and Surapol have met. Earlier this year, Surapol captured the victory in three sets on February 10 when Pepperdine and UCLA met in the regular season.
The doubles came to a close today with No. 2 seed Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Chris Surapol of UCLA claiming the title. The tandem defeated teammates Jeremy Drean and Mathieu Dehaine 8-4 in the final match.
