Pepperdine's Andre Begemann knocked off the No. 1 seed, the No. 4 seed and today, the No. 2 seed, en route to winning his first individual championship. Begemann defeated UCLA's Chris Surapol to claim the singles title of the ITA Western Regionals (South) to earn an automatic spot to the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships on Nov. 2-5 in Columbus, Ohio.
Eighth-seeded Begemann defeated No. 2 seed Surapol in straight sets on Monday afternoon at the Ralphs-Straus Tennis Center in Malibu, Calif. After trailing 2-0, Begemann came back to win the first set 6-3 and followed with a 7-6 win in the second set to capture the title.
The junior became the first Wave to win the ITA Regionals Singles Championship of the under head coach Adam Steinberg. Last year, Steinberg guided Pepperdine standouts Ivor Lovrak and Pedro Rico to an ITA Regionals Doubles Championship.
