Berkeley, CA - Three Saint Mary's men's tennis players participated in the Chandler Cup Invitational over the weekend. The invitational was hosted by California, and included players from thirteen different programs.
Joel Kusnierz advanced to the semi-finals of the tournament's Flight A ITA Singles, falling to California's Bo Katsarov in a close match, 6-4; 3-6; 7-6(2). Katsarov would continue tournament play to eventually win in the finals. Head coach Michael Wayman stated, "Joel had a very good weekend for us. He has the potential to win tournaments like these, and his play this weekend represents the bright future he has ahead of him."
Kusnierz won three straight matches to advance to the semi-finals. In the round of 32 the senior dominated play against Stanford's Greg Hirshman, defeating the Cardinal 6-1; 6-2. In the second round the France native took down Washington's Tobi Obenaus 6-4; 6-2, therefore advancing to the tournament quarterfinals. Sacramento State's Anton Stryhas gave Kusnierz a little more of a challenge, but not quite enough, as the Gael defeated the Hornet, 6-4; 6-2. With the three wins in hand Kusnierz improved to the semi-finals of the tournament.
Joining Kusnierz at the invitational, were fellow Gaels, Andrea Zannoni and Marek Dvorak. On the first day of the tournament Andrea Zanonni defeated UC Santa Cruz's Ilya Gendelman (2-6; 6-1; 6-3) and Pacific's Vegerd Veskimagi (6-3; 6-4) in the invitational's Flight B ITA Singles. The next day out Zanonni fell to Washington's David Chu in a close match, 6-3; 4-6; 6-3.
In doubles action Joel Kusnierz paired up with Marek Dvorak to defeat California's Jonathan Dahan and Pierre Mouillon in the Flight A Doubles Consolation Quarterfinals. The Gaels defeated the Golden Bears 8-3 in the match.
The Gaels return to fall play on November 2-4 at the Pacific Invitational in Stockton, CA.
