MALIBU, Calif. - Senior Sean Rooney pounded out 13 kills, while freshman Jonathan Winder dished out 35 assists as the Pepperdine men's volleyball team swept the Calgary Dinos, 30-26, 30-20, 30-27, Friday afternoon in Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
Leading two-games-to-none and 19-17 in game three, Tanner Sutherland caught fire. Sutherland notched his third kill of the night to give the Waves a 20-18 advantage and moved to the service line. Three consecutive aces later Pepperdine enjoyed a 23-18 lead. Following a Calgary attack error, Sutherland recorded back-to-back aces. The Waves would fight off a late surge from the Dinos who fought off five match points.
"At times I thought we played pretty well," commented head coach Marv Dunphy. "We were inconsistent at times which doesn't surprise me at this time of the year."
Rooney's 13 kills led all players followed by John Parfitt's nine and Tom Hulse and John Mayer's seven. The Waves used a decisive height advantage to out-block Calgary 15.5-4.0. Andy Hein tallied seven block assists, with Winder tacking on one solo and five assists.
The Waves broke game two open with a 19-9 run with the game tied at 11-all. Pepperdine's attack fired on all cylinders in the game as the team hit .386 compared to the Dinos' .071.
Game one saw the Waves build up a six-point advantage at 20-14. But Calgary would fight back to pull within one at 26-25. But Pepperdine would never relinquish the lead scoring four of the final five points.
Pepperdine will be back in action on Monday at it takes on Cal Baptist at 7:00 p.m. (PT) at Firestone Fieldhouse.
