MALIBU, Calif. - The Pepperdine men's volleyball team won its third-consecutive match Friday night with a 3-0 (30-26, 30-23, 30-23) sweep of UC San Diego at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif. The win pushed the Waves' record to 5-1 (5-1 MPSF) on the season, while the loss dropped the Tritons to 0-7 (0-6 MPSF).
Pepperdine fount itself down 6-2 in the early stages of game three until UCSD committed three-straight attack errors pulling Pepperdine within one, 6-5. With the game in the Tritons' favor, 10-7, The Waves got a kill from middle blocker Andy Hein which sparked a 9-2 Pepperdine run putting the Waves in position to complete the sweep. UC San Diego got as close a three, 20-17, but 7-1 Pepperdine run put the game and match out of reach.
Sean Rooney cranked out a match-best 15 kills on the night and registered seven total blocks, while middle blocker Tom Hulse turned in a career-best 10 kills on 17 swings without an error. Hein ended the night with seven kills on eight swings and no errors as the Waves hit .448 for the match.
The UCSD offense was held in check the entire night as the Tritons hit just .168 for the match, including .095 in game three. Luke Honnette led all UC San Diego players with 14 kills.
Game two saw the Tritons open with a 4-0 run but Pepperdine called a timeout, regrouped and answered with an 8-2 run of its own. The Waves would later use runs of 5-2 and 9-3 effectively putting distance between them and UCSD.
The first game of the night opened as a sea-saw battle as the teams were knotted up at 22-all. But a 5-2 run would lift Pepperdine to the 1-0 lead in the match.
Pepperdine will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 4, when it travel to Los Angeles for a 7:00 p.m. (PT) first serve with the Trojans of Southern Cal.
