MALIBU, Calif. - It took just 76 minutes for the Pepperdine men's volleyball team to get back in the win column after recording a 30-20, 30-21, 30-27 sweep of UC San Diego Saturday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine (12-4, 12-4 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) received 12 kills from John Parfitt and 10 from Paul Carroll and hit .333 as a team in the winning effort. Andy Hein chipped in with nine kills on 15 swings to hit .600 for the contest.
UCSD (1-20, 0-16 MPSF) was paced by Chris Sayers' match-high 15 kills and Jon Daze's eight but hit just .094 as a team in the loss.
Game one was close until leading 10-9, Pepperdine used a 4-0 run to take control of the game. The lead would reach seven after Tom Hulse and Jonathan Winder teamed up for one of the Wave's 13 blocks on the night, 19-12. After the Tritons pulled within four, 19-15, Pepperdine would go on 11-5 run to close out the game.
The Waves took control of game two early and led 14-9 after a Hein service ace. A 4-1 run by UCSD closed the gap to just two, 15-13. Leading by four, 23-19, Pepperdine would use a 7-3 run to go up in the match, 2-0.
The Tritons jumped out to a 7-3 lead on Pepperdine in game three. After trading sideouts for the next 10 points the Waves connected on three consecutive attacks to pull within one, 12-11. UCSD would regain a two-point edge and hold it to a 23-21 lead. But four consecutive Triton miscues would put the Waves on top for good.
Pepperdine returns to action Thurs., March 16, when it hosts UCLA at 7 p.m. (PT).
