MALIBU, Calif. - The top-ranked Pepperdine Waves capped a 4-0 non-conference slate with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-21, 30-24) victory over the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders Thursday night at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
The victory was the 14th straight for Pepperdine which improved to 17-1 on the year. For Rutgers-Newark, the loss was the 16th straight as the Scarlet Raiders fall to 2-19.
Paul Carroll led all players with 17 kills in the match, including a kill on each of his eight swings in game three. He also picked up an ace in the final game to stretch his consecutive matches with an ace streak to 12 straight.
Eric Honsberger led Rutgers-Newark with 16 kills on .310 hitting, Nate Stott added 12 kills.
Pepperdine broke game one open with a 10-3 run that was keyed by a kill from Hulse. Leading 22-16, the Waves closed out the set with an 8-3 run, taking a 1-0 lead in the match. In game one, Pepperdine hit .714 and limited Rutgers-Newark to just .077.
The Waves broke open an 8-8 stalemate with a 6-0 run. Already leading 22-16, the Waves secured a 2-0 lead in the match by closing the game on an 8-5 run. Pepperdine hit at a .517 clip to Rutgers-Newark's 0.80.
Game three was close much of the way. Pepperdine took a four-point 19-15 lead but out of a timeout, Rutgers-Newark answered with a 4-0 run to tie the game at 19-all. From there, Pepperdine outscored its opponent by an 11-6 margin to complete the sweep.
Pepperdine will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play on Saturday when it travels to La Jolla, Calif. to face UC San Diego at 7 p.m. PDT. The Waves topped the Tritons 3-1 in the team's first meeting of the season.
