SAN DIEGO, Calif. - The top-ranked Pepperdine Waves improved to 8-0 on the road this season with a 3-0 (30-18, 30-25, 30-16) victory over the UC San Diego Tritons Saturday night in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play at the RIMAC Arena in La Jolla, Calif.
Paul Carroll and Tom Hulse had 10 kills a piece for Pepperdine (18-1, 14-1 MPSF). J.D. Schleppenbach added eight and Jon Grobe had seven in the victory. Hulse had a match-high six blocks, while Greg Gaudino and Jonathan Winder added five each.
UC San Diego (5-17, 2-14 MPSF) got 11 kills from Will Ehrman and seven from Frank Fritsch in the loss.
Pepperdine used 6.5 blocks in game one to overcome .276 hitting in taking a 1-0 lead in the match. Two of Hulse's four kills in the set helped the Waves get out to a 9-4 lead. UC San Diego was held to minus .100 hitting with eight kills and 11 errors on 30 swings for the frame.
The Waves took control of game two from the start, getting out to an 11-3 lead. UC San Diego closed the gap to as few as five after a 3-0 run made the score 17-12. The Tritons fought off three game-point attempts before serving out to go down 2-0. Pepperdine added five blocks to their total in the frame in holding UC San Diego to .188 hitting.
The final game of the match started much like the first two, with Pepperdine getting out to a big lead early and just maintaining its edge. The Waves hit .731 in the game with 19 kills and zero errors.
Pepperdine will look to clinch a berth in the conference tournament next weekend when it travels to Long Beach, Calif. on Sat., March 24 to face the 49ers at 7 p.m. PDT.
