MALIBU, Calif. - Pepperdine dropped game one of Thursday night's men's volleyball match to the Cal Baptist Lancers but surged back in the next three games to snap the Wave's two-match skid with a 3-1 victory at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif.
Pepperdine (14-6) was led by Paul Carroll's (Forester, Australia) 19 kills on .455 hitting, while senior Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) and junior John Parfitt (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) recorded 15 kills each for the Waves.
Cal Baptist (17-8) received a match-high 21 kills from Shamsu Awudu and 14 from Seidu Ajanako but hit just .254 to Pepperdine's .311 in the losing effort.
In the decisive game four, the Waves would fall behind 7-2 and did not hold a lead until a Parfitt kill capped a 5-1 Pepperdine run and gave the home team a 28-27 advantage. Awudu knotted the game up at 28-28 but a kill from Hein followed by a Jonathan Winder (Irvine, Calif.) kill capped the 30-28 victory.
Neither team held a sizeable lead in game three as there were 10 ties within the first 30 total points. A 6-1 Wave run after trailing 15-14 provided the home team with the three-point cushion they would use for the 30-27 victory and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Waves evened the match at one game apiece with a 30-25 victory in game two. Pepperdine would hit a blistering .483 in the game committing just two attack errors in the frame. The Waves trailed just once, 2-1 before moving out to a 9-6 lead. CBU would tie the score at 13-, 14- and 15-all but was never able to regain the lead.
Awudu logged eight kills in game one to help lead his team to a 1-0 lead in the match with a 30-27 victory. The game saw several shifts in momentum as Pepperdine overcame a 15-12 deficit with a 4-0 run. The Lancers answered with a 5-2 spurt to take a 20-18 lead. The Waves regrouped out of a timeout to score the next five points and seemed to have the game in hand leading, 23-20. But CBU promptly recaptured the lead with a 4-0 run. A sideout battle ensued with Cal Baptist able to take advantage of a pair of Wave miscues for the victory.
Pepperdine will return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play Wednesday night when it travels to Cal State Northridge for a 7 p.m. (PT) first serve at the Matadome. The Waves claimed the first meeting between the two teams, 3-2, on February 18.
