Pepperdine Swept Despite Hein's Seven Blocks

April 5, 2006

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Pepperdine failed to secure at least one home match in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) tournament Wednesday night when it was swept by Cal State Northridge (30-22, 30-28, 30-26) at the Matadome in Northridge, Calif.

The Waves (14-7, 13-7 MPSF) hit just .181 on the night with John Parfitt (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) recording a team-leading 11 kills and Paul Carroll (Forster, Australia) chipping in with 10. Senior Andy Hein (Carol Stream, Ill.) turned in nine kills with seven blocks for Pepperdine.

Dan Rhodes led all players with 19 kills, while James Lischer and Brian Waite added 10 each for Northridge (17-8, 12-7). The Matadors finished the night hitting a combined .325 in snapping Pepperdine's six-match win streak over CSUN.

Leading 9-5 in game three, the Waves maintained control of the game and after consecutive blocks had built up a six point, 17-11 lead. But Pepperdine was unable to deliver the knockout blow committing consecutive hitting errors on the next two attempts which was the beginning of what would be a 19-9 CSUN run to close out the match.

Pepperdine would open game two with a 5-1 run but would surrender its lead after consecutive hitting errors capped a 5-1 Matador run, prompting Marv Dunphy to call his first timeout of the game. The Waves scored the first six points out of the break as part of an 8-1 run to take a commanding 20-15 lead.. After a 6-2 CSUN run pulled the home team within one, 22-21, Pepperdine recorded a pair of kills and a block for a 25-21 lead. The advantage would be short lived when the Waves would score just twice more in the frame and fall behind 2-0 in the match.

Three consecutive Pepperdine overpasses resulted in Isaac Kneubuhl kills as CSUN took a 12-8 lead in game one. The Waves would use a 4-1 run to close the deficit to one, 13-12, but the Matadors would capitalize on five Pepperdine attack errors as part of a 14-6 run which put the game out of reach. For the game, CSUN hit .415 to the Wave's .171.

Pepperdine will close out the 2006 regular season with a pair of home tilts beginning Saturday when the Waves host UC Santa Barbara. In the first meeting of the season between the two teams, the Gauchos claimed a 3-2 victory on Feb. 15 at Rob Gym. Pepperdine will host USC a week later on April 15 in the season finale. First serve for both matches is scheduled for 7 p.m. (PT) and will be contested at Firestone Fieldhouse.
