MALIBU, Calif. - Coming off a 2005 season which saw the Pepperdine men's volleyball team claim its fifth national title, the 2006 squad will open the season with a No. 3 ranking in the CSTV/AVCA Division I-II Coaches Top 15 Poll.
Long Beach State (3-0) opens the season at the top spot with seven of the 16 first-place votes and 229 total points, while UCLA holds down the No. 2 spot with 210 points and zero first-place votes. The Waves check in at No. 3 receiving four first-place votes and 202 total points, BYU pulled in five first-pace votes and 196 total points and Cal State Northridge rounds out the top five with 169 points.
Pepperdine opened the 2005 season at No. 3. The Waves have opened the year inside the top 5 in seven of the last 8 seasons, including twice at the top spot.
The Waves open the season on Fri., Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. (PT) against No. 15 Stanford at Firestone Fieldhouse. On Saturday they will take on No. 12 Pacific at 7 p.m.
