Men's Volleyball Opens Season with No. 3/2 Ranking

Jan. 11, 2005

MALIBU, Calif. - With the start of the 2005 Men's volleyball season set for Friday, the Waves enter the year ranked #3 in the USA Today/CSTV poll. The ranking is the highest ranking in the first poll of the season for Pepperdine since 2001 when the Waves were #1. The Waves also open the 2005 season in the top five of the Volleyball Magazine poll, at #2.

Pepperdine is one of just four schools to have been ranked in every USA Today/CSTV poll since it began in 1986 (261 weeks). The other schools are UCLA, Long Beach State and Hawaii.

The Waves are coming off a 19-9 record in 2004 and begin the 2005 season at #9 Pacific (3-1) on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (PT). Pepperdine will end opening-weekend action on Saturday as it faces #8 Stanford (1-2) in Palo Alto, Calif.

It was a successful preseason for Pepperdine as the Waves took first place in the Brian Mallard Invitational, Dec. 31-Jan. 3 and swept Calgary at home on the 7th in exhibition play.
