MALIBU, Calif. - After opening the 2005 season with four consecutive road matches, the Pepperdine men's volleyball team will take on Long Beach State and UC San Diego in its home opener Thursday and Friday.
The Waves are off to a 3-1 (3-1 MPSF) start with the lone blemish coming at the hands of top-ranked UCLA. The Bruins swept Pepperdine in Pauley Pavilion on Jan. 19. Pepperdine came back two days later and handed #12 UC Irvine a 3-1 loss in Irvine.
Sean Rooney continues to carry Pepperdine averaging 5.94 kills per game, while hitting at a .379 clip. The Wheaton, Ill., native has also delivered 16 aces on the year. As a team, Pepperdine is averaging 3.09 blocks led by middle blockers Andy Hein (1.56) and Tom Hulse (1.25).
Long Beach State (5-2, 3-1 MPSF) held steady at the #5 spot this week after posting a pair of sweeps over Pacific and Stanford last weekend.
The 49ers are paced Yassir Sliti's 4.35 k/g, while Duncan Budinger is hitting at a .422 clip.
UC San Diego if off to a rocky start posting an 0-5 overall record and 0-4 league record.
The Tritons are led in kills by Luke Honnette's 4.83/g. Honnette also leads the team with a .363 attack percentage.
Pepperdine will play Long Beach State on Thursday and UCSD on Friday with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m. (PT) both nights.
