MALIBU, Calif. -
The No. 3-ranked Pepperdine men's volleyball team will open a riggerous two-week stretch this weekend as it heads to Honolulu, Hawaii, for a pair of matches against the No. 2-ranked Warriors. The Waves currently sit atop the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings at 10-1 in league play, while Hawaii is one-half game back at 9-1 (11-2 overall) and No. 1-ranked UCLA is one game back at 11-2 (15-2 overall). The Waves are scheduled to host the Bruins on March 12.
Sean Rooney is 31 kills shy of moving into third on Pepperdine's career list and is averaging 5.21 a game this season. John Parfitt continues to improve after making the move to the outside from the middle and adds 3.73 kills a game, while rightside John Mayer and middle Andy Hein contribute 2.52 and 2.40, respectively. Hein's attack percentage of .586 is tops in the NCAA and his 1.36 blocks per game is a team-high.
Hawaii's Matt Bender was tabbed Sports Import/CSTV National Player of the Week after leading the Warriors to a series spilt against UCLA last week in Los Angeles. Pedro Asenha paces the Hawaii offense at 4.46 kills a game, while Bender chips in 3.55.
Both Wednesday and Friday's matches are slated for a 5:00 p.m. (PT) first serve at the Stan Sherrif Center.
