MALIBU, Calif. -
When the top-ranked Pepperdine Waves visit No. 8 Long Beach State Saturday night at The Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, Calif., there will be more on the line than avenging the Waves' lone loss on the season. A victory over the 49ers would make Pepperdine the first team to clinch a berth in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) tournament next month.
Pepperdine (18-1, 14-1 MPSF) has won 15 straight since dropping a 3-2 decision to Long Beach State (11-9, 6-8 MPSF) back on January 19 in Malibu. The streak is tied for the second longest string of single-season victories behind the 17 straight during the 2002 season.
But like in the first meeting of the season against the 49ers, Pepperdine will not be at full strength as senior outside hitter John Parfitt has missed eight of the last 11 contests. Unlike the first meeting, the Waves will be with their All-American setter in Jonathan Winder who has compiled an impressive 56-10 record as the team's quarterback in two-plus seasons.
First serve is slated for 7 p.m. PDT.
Next week, Pepperdine returns home for a pair of key conference matches, hosting No. 4 UCLA and No. 2 UC Irvine at Firestone Fieldhouse.
