MALIBU, Calif. -
Friday night the top-ranked Pepperdine Waves men's volleyball team will close out the home portion of its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) schedule as it takes on 10th-ranked Stanford at 7:00 p.m. (PT). Thus far in 2005, the Waves are 10-0 at Firestone Fieldhouse and are riding a 14-match win streak.
The night will also serve as senior night for three Pepperdine players - Sean Rooney, John Mayer and James Ka. The Waves are 16-1 (16-1 MPSF) this season and hold a 2.5-game lead over UCLA for the No. 1 seed at the conference tournament in April.
Pepperdine is led by three-time All-American Rooney who is third in the nation averaging 5.20 kills per game. Junior Andy Hein leads the NCAA with a .541 attack percentage, while freshman Jonathan Winder ranks second in assists at 13.56.
The Wave's block has been a large part of Pepperdine's success this season as Tom Hulse ranks fifth and Hein ranks seventh in blocks per game at 1.41 and 1.38, respectively. As a team, Pepperdine holds a 3.33-1.78 advantage.
Stanford enters the week with an overall record of 8-10 and sit at 7-8 in conference play. The Cardinal are returning to the court for the first time since a 3-1 loss to UC Santa Barbara on March 5, a span of 20 days.
Ben Reddy tops a list of three players who all average over 3.0 kills per game, while Chris Ahlfeldt is hitting at a team-leading .422 clip.
Stanford has won five of its last seven heading into Friday's match but dropped the first meeting with Pepperdine, 3-1, on Jan. 19 in Stanford, Calif.
