MALIBU, Calif. -
The Pepperdine men's volleyball team will host NAIA's top-ranked team Cal Baptist Friday night in Firestone Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m. (PT) in a make-up match from Jan. 10 when heavy rains in Southern California forced the closure of the Malibu. The match will be the lone contest for the Waves this season not against a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) team.
The second-ranked Waves (18-2) are looking for consecutive wins after seeing their 15-match win streak come to an end last week in Long Beach. Pepperdine rebounded two nights after the loss to sweep UC San Diego at the RIMAC Arena.
Pepperdine is led by three-time All-American Sean Rooney who is averaging 5.37 kills per game this season, while hitting at a .414 clip. Junior Andy Hein leads the team with a .527 attack percentage. Freshman Jonathan Winder is averaging 13.72 assists per game, while quarterbacking the team to a conference-leading .367 attack percentage.
The Waves hold a two-match lead over UCLA in the conference standings. The Bruins have four MPSF matches left on their schedule, while Pepperdine has just two. The Waves will host at least one postseason match as the team can finish no lower than second in the conference. The MPSF champion gets a first round bye and the right to host the semi-finals and finals of the conference tournament.
Pepperdine won the first-ever meeting with CBU, 3-2, in 2003.
