Pepperdine Chases History, Closes out Regular Season

Winners of 20 straight matches, the top-ranked Pepperdine Waves will look to continue their winning ways as they close out the 2007 regular season at home against Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara.

Both Thursday's match against the Matadors and Saturday's match against the Gauchos are slated for 7 p.m. PDT first serves at Firestone Fieldhouse where the Waves are 12-1 this season.

In the first meeting of the season between Pepperdine and Cal State Northridge, the two teams battled to a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation record 45-43 score in the first game of the Waves' 3-2 victory in Northridge, Calif.

Three nights later against UC Santa Barbara, Pepperdine rallied late in games one and two to pull off 30-28 victories before completing the sweep, 30-18, in game three.

No MPSF team has won more than 20 conference matches in a single season. With a pair of victories this week Pepperdine will finish the year with a 21-1 conference record.

After this weekend, Pepperdine will be idle until its MPSF semifinal match on Thurs., April 26. Eight of the conference's 12 teams will battle in a single-elimination tournament with the champion earning the MPSF's automatic berth to the NCAA Championships in Columbus, Ohio.
