MALIBU, Calif. -
The Pepperdine men's volleyball team closes out the 2005 regular season this week on the road when it faces No. 7 UC Santa Barbara Wednesday and No. 8 Cal State Northridge on Friday. Both matches are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m. (PT).
For the Waves the math is simple, win one and they are assured of a share of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) title, win two and Pepperdine will claim its third MPSF crown in the last four seasons.
Pepperdine (19-2, 18-2 MPSF) topped UCSB in the first meeting of the season on Feb. 8, 3-2. In the match, the Waves jumped out to a 2-0 lead before holding off a Gaucho's rally with a 15-12 win in game five. Things were much less dramatic the first time around against the Matadors as Pepperdine posted the 3-0 victory on Feb. 23.
Andy Hein leads the team in hitting percentage checking in at a .517 clip, while Sean Rooney is averaging a team-high 5.27 kill per game. The Waves are coming off a 3-2 victory over Cal Baptist last week, a match which saw the Waves hold a 24.0-10.0 advantage in blocks. For the season, Pepperdine has outblocked its opponents by a 3.40-1.77 margin. Tom Hulse leads the block party, averaging 1.46 per game followed by Hein's 1.37.
Pepperdine is assured of hosting at least one MPSF postseason match either as the No. 2 seed on April 23, or as the semifinal/final host on April 27 and 29 depending on the outcome of this week's matches.
