MALIBU, Calif. - It was no April Fools joke Saturday night as the three higher-seeded, visiting teams went into hostile environments and pulled out dramatic upsets in the quarterfinal round of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) post season tournament. The four-team field of Pepperdine, Long Beach State, UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge will compete for the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships beginning Thurs., April 28, at Firestone Fieldhouse in Malibu, Calif., with the championship match set for 6:30 p.m. April 30.
Pepperdine (21-2) earned a bye into this week's semi-final round by claiming the regular-season title with a 20-2 league record. The Waves will host No. 4 seeded Cal State Northridge at 5 p.m. (PDT). The Matadors (19-13) defeated Stanford, 3-1, in the play-in match on April 20 prior to stunning UCLA, 3-2, Saturday night at Pauley Pavilion.
The second semi-final match set for 7:30 p.m. will pit No. 2 seed Long Beach State (21-9) against No 3 seed UC Santa Barbara (16-13). The 49ers have been on a roll of late, winners in 12 of the last 14 contests including a 3-1 victory over Hawaii in Honolulu in the quarterfinal round. The Gauchos defeated defending National Champion BYU, 3-2, in Provo, Utah, to punch their ticket to the next round.
Single match tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for students/children/seniors citizens, while all-tournament packages are being sold for $20 for adults and $14 for students/children/senior citizens and can be purchased by calling 1-866 WAVE TIX (928-3849) Monday through Wednesday from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m.
