May 8-Junior All-American outside hitter Katie Wilkins was one of 20 collegiate women's volleyball players invited to train in the USA Volleyball National A2 Program, the organization announced on Wednesday. The program is designed to provide prospective National Team athletes with opportunities to prepare for future participation, according to Tom Pingel, USA Volleyball's Director of High Performance National Programs.

Participation in the 2A program will be broken down into two phases. Phase I will involve eight athletes who will be invited to train with the U.S. Women's National Team at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs from May 19 until approximately June 24. Though the Phase I A2 team will not be participating in any specific competition during its stay, there is a chance that some of the athletes may be invited to remain to be a part of future National Team Programs -- including Team USA at the 2002 World Championships in Germany August 30 through September 15. Wilkins led Pepperdine and the West Coast Conference (WCC) with a 4.96 kills-per-game average, registered a .284 hitting percentage and tallied 47 blocks. She reached double-digit kill totals in 24 of 27 matches and recorded seven double-doubles (kills-digs) while helping the Waves register a 23-4 overall record, capture the WCC title and advance to the "Sweet 16" of the NCAA Championships.

In addition to earning second team All-American honors, Wilkins was named to the AVCA's All-Pacific Region Team, selected the WCC's Player of the Year, garnered first team all-conference honors, earned-league Player of the Month honors and was chosen WCC Player of the Week three times. Wilkins became the fifth player in Pepperdine history to receive All-American recognition and her second-team selection is the highest ever by Waves player.
