Saint Mary??s College of California Director of Athletics, Carl R Clapp announced today the hiring of Jon Stevenson as the head women??s volleyball coach

Saint Mary??s College of California Director of Athletics, Carl R. Clapp announced today the hiring of Jon Stevenson as the head women??s volleyball coach. Stevenson, who will officially start on March 1, 2002, brings a wealth of experience to Saint Mary??s, both as a coach and player. He becomes the seventh head coach in 23 years of the program.

"Jon is a terrific addition to our coaching staff,?? commented Clapp. ??Jon's background includes a significant amount of coaching experience and it is obvious he has a passion for the sport of volleyball. We??re fortunate to hire Jon, and we look forward to working with him to bring our volleyball program to prominence in the West Coast Conference."

Stevenson comes to Saint Mary??s from Sonoma State University where he was the woman??s volleyball head coach for two seasons. In his first season in 1999, Stevenson??s program finished 7-21. In his second season he guided the Cossacks to a 22-11 campaign in 2000 and a top-10 Division II, Pacific Region ranking. Prior to his tenure at Sonoma State, Stevenson was an assistant coach for the women??s volleyball team at the University of Wyoming in 1999 and 2000. He was the head coach of the men??s volleyball team at the University of California at San Diego from 1998-99 and was an assistant coach for the men??s volleyball team at UC Santa Barbara in 1986-87. He served as an assistant coach at Santa Barbara City College for one year and was a player/coach in the A-1 Division of the Italian professional indoor league in 1985-86. He also coached Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarch to Silver medals in the 1996 Olympics, while coaching fellow Olympians Barbra Fontana and Linda Hanley on the women??s side.

After graduating from UC Santa Barbara in 1980 with a bachelors degree in Psychology, Stevenson joined the Association of Volleyball Professionals in 1981 and played on the Professional Beach Volleyball Tour from 1980-1996. During his 16 years on the tour, he garnered a AVP Tour Grand Championship and the AVP Tour Sportsman of the Year award in 1984, was a two-time Defensive Player of the Year and finished 11th on the all-time career win list. Stevenson was inducted into the California Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1995, the Professional Beach Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1996 and the NIKE ??Legends of Beach Volleyball?? in 1997.

As a professional volleyball player, Stevenson served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1984-96, was the player liaison from 1988-89 and was elected the Player President from 1989-95. Upon his retirement from the tour, he was hired as the Senior Vice President for Tour Administration and President of AVP Properties.
